I love my children. I love how they grow and develop. I have a 19yr old son who right now is a ‘learner driver’ and looks for any chance he can to drive the car.

Last night we went 2 ½ hours south to watch a pageant on a hillside. My son grabbed the keys and said he’d drive. No problem…I’d sit in the back while my husband, who knew the way, sat in the front.

No problem that is until for a full 90 minutes we were in peak hour traffic AND the most insane road-work I’ve ever seen!

Forget about any music being played, and the only communication consisted of the following phrases being said over and over again.

ME….     “Slow down. Slow Down. SLOW DOWN NOW!!!”

“Too close!!!!”

“Pull over and let your father drive!!” I don’t know why I said this because there was no place to pull off the road in order to change drivers so of course there was no driver change.

It’s all over now. We arrived safely and got to enjoy the rest of the evening. It wasn’t until we arrived back to the car to head home that as I climbed into the passenger side of the car and glanced over to the driver’s side, I see my son back behind the wheel with a big grin on his face. I opened my mouth to let him know that there was more chance of pigs flying than me allowing him to get behind the wheel AGAIN….. when I realized it was a joke.

BAD JOKE….ok….it was really funny but for a split second there it simply a BAD JOKE.

I’m sure I’m not the only person who has had to drive in the backseat with their foot on the ‘brake’ the entire time. So share….what backseat driving experience have you survived?
