My admiration of Jamie Oliver led me to buy one of his latest books, ‘Jamie’s 30 Minute Meals’. As a busy mother of three young children it is important to me to have meals that I can cook quickly. But as a passionate home cook I also like to have meals that fulfil my passion of cooking (and my husband’s love of eating) gourmet food.
We have all enjoyed the flavours and each have our favourites – even the children! Some of the recipes have a lot of chilli or other ingredients that the children do not like, but there are others they have loved.
As a family of 5 we do not always have leftovers, especially of those that are family favourites. However, we have found that most meals from Jamie’s 30 Minute Meals do have leftovers! Plus as an added bonus, most of the meals have dessert! Yum!
In preparing to start the cooking of the first meal, I thought that I was very fast at moving around my kitchen and preparing food for cooking. But, boy, was I wrong! I was not as fast as I thought. I had been concerned I would not be fast enough.
However, in the introductory note, Jamie Oliver reassured readers that while you may not complete the meals in the promised 30 minutes the first time you prepare it, after practice you will be able to move and prepare your meals in 30 minutes. For my first attempt I completed the meal in 36 minutes!
The instructions are simple and easy to follow. Jamie Oliver encourages you to use good-quality, organic ingredients but as our budget sometimes does not permit these ingredients we have substituted non-organic and cheaper ingredients.
Overall, from a cooking perspective, I have enjoyed the meals and cooking experiences in Jamie’s 30 Minute Meals. I am pleased that my children, who can be slightly picky, love many of the meals we have prepared!

I might need to get this book. My 12 year old is very interested in cooking at the moment and I really want to encourage that for as long as we can.
As the Eat part of the Cook & Eat website, I would say every family with teenagers should have this book. The instructions are easy to follow and there are pictures of the tricky steps (I think!) – at least there are photos of what every part of the meal should look like. It is very easy to follow and would be a great place to start.
Thanks JB. We have been cooking from the 4 Ingredients cookbook, so this will be a good step up I think
Worked now!
